The "Laws of the Navy," a long poem is included in the appendix, ends, "Now these are the Laws of the Navy / And many and mighty are they. / But the hull and the deck and the keel / And the truck of the law is -- OBEY." The history of this particular book is in itself engaging, as revealed by the ownership stamps on the first free endpaper: starting off at the US Naval Training School at Northampton, Mass; thence to the Ship's Library of the USS Sevier, and finally to the library of the secret US Naval base at the Old Milano Hotel in Gualala, California.
