Description:
London: Printed for J. Murray..., 1773. 8vo, 211 x 127 mms., pp. [iv], xxii, 312, including half-title, contemporary calf; binding dried, piece of leather missing from lower front corner, joints very slightly cracked. John Millar (1735 - 1801), Professor of Civil Law at the University of Glasgow, is a good example of an author whose reputation flourished during his lifetime, and who thereafter virtually disappeared from the map of intellectual history. Observations concerning the Distinction of Ranks in Society was first published in an attractive quarto by John Murray in London in 1771; a Dublin edition was published in the same year by Thomas Ewing with Murray's consent and collaboration. A second edition, "greatly enlarged," followed in 1773, and for the third edition, "corrected and enlarged" of 1779, Millar revised the title to The Origin of the Distinction of Ranks: Or, An Enquiry into the Circumstances which Give Rise of Influence and Authority in the Different…

The final chapter 'Of the condition of servants in different parts of the world' demonstrates both Millar's support of the American cause and his opposition towards slavery. Description:
London: W. and J. Richardson for John Murray 1773 Second edition, enlarged, of an important sociological and anthropological study by John Millar (1735-1801), Professor of Law at the University of Glasgow and friend of Hume, Adam Smith and other members of the Scottish enlightenment. The first edition, in quarto format, appeeared two years earlier.. Contemporary polished calf. Gilt-ruled spine with red morocco label. Octavo. One inch split along front joint near head of spine. Offsetting to first and last couple of leaves from binding. Overall a very good, clean copy. The present work "contains a number of ingenious, progressive and penetrating ideas. It begins with the history of the station of women. Millar was by no means a primitivist, but he points out the equal and qualified station of women in primitive societies, thus making him a precursor of Bachofen. The advancement of civilization or the progress of labour and wealth, had formerly served to reduce the station of women, but since feudal…

Description:
London: Printed For J.Murray, 1773., 1773. 8vo. pp. 2 p.l., xxii, 312. with half-title. A nice copy in modern quarter calf over contemporary marbled bds. (covers rubbed, marginal browning to outer leaves). Second Enlarged Edition. An important early exercise in modern sociological inquiry and comparative anthropology. The work, which shows the influence of Montesquieu and David Hume, contains a study of primitive society, and the first third of the book is devoted to the study of the rank and condition of women through the ages. It is "remarkable for its anticipation of the views of more recent writers. The prescience of his views on gynaecocracy, or that stage of social development wherein, through kinship counting from the mother, the position of woman is most important, is borne witness to by J.F.Maclennan, in his Studies in Ancient History.". (Palgrave) The last chapter deals with slavery, which Millar opposed. Millar was professor of law at the University of Glasgow and a close friendf of Adam…

Description:
London: Printed by W. and J. Richardson, for John Murray,, 1771. Among the earliest works of empirical sociology First edition of Millar's most important work, one of the earliest and finest examples of an empirical approach to sociology. "Of a remarkably liberal tone, Millar's study of social rank covers class distinction, the history and condition of women, primitive society, and the relationship between parent and child, and master and servant" (German, p. 67). The influence of Montesquieu and, particularly, of Hume's The Populousness of Ancient Nations is evident. Millar was a supporter of the American cause and an opponent of slavery; both feature in the final chapter, "Of the condition of servants in different parts of the world". Born in Lanarkshire the son of the local minister, Millar (1735-1801) "studied law at Glasgow, where he was an intimate of James Watt (1736-1819), the inventor of the steam engine, and where he attended the lectures of Adam Smith. After completion of his studies,…
