Among the least known but most accomplished scholars of Arabia and the Levant, the Czech explorer Alois Musil traveled through northern Hejaz and Najd, extensively mapping the topography as he went. American Geographical Society, Oriental Explorations and Studies No. 2. Tall octavo. Original gray cloth binding, with black and gilt titles. Internally crisp and clean. Small ink stamp ("Michael M. Ripinsky Collection") to the front flyleaf and rear pastedown. Light wear to the corners and tips; else very good.

Owner name penned to ffep. Otherwise no markings and pretty clean internally, with very occasional light foxing. Securely bound. "...made up my mind to penetrate [Arabia Deserta] and to remain there for some considerable time in order to draw a map as a basis for historical investigations and to study the life of the inhabitants...I tried to to secure the protection of its head chief and to migrate with him like a member of his family...I was able to realize my intention, and duriing 1908 and 1909 I spent many months in mysterious Arabia Deserta." This copy with the signature on the front endpaper of the scholar and Arab Studies professor, Dr. Louise Sweet. A few of her pencilled notations to the contents. This is a heavy book, the text printed on coated paper. Rubbing to board edges and light general soiling to cloth. A good plus copy. Musil (1868-1944) was a Czech explorer, orientalist, and writer. In the years 1887-1891 he studied at the Theological faculty of Olomouc, and was consecrated a priest in 1891. He received his doctorate in theology in 1895. In the years 1895 to 1898, he studied at the Dominican Bible School in Jerusalem, and at the Jesuit University of St. Joseph in Beirut.
