Book has a slight forward lean.

Light blue cloth with gilt lettering and dark blue pictorial spine stamping, pictorial dust jacket. xv, 589pp. Very good/good plus. Jacket quite edgeworn and rubbed, with small edge chips -- yet complete and fairly attractive nonetheless. A tight and nice first U.S. edition of the first-ever translation of this 1857 novel ("Confessions of an Italian") but not published in Italian until 1867 by the Italian writer and journalist (1831-61) -- often called the most important novel about the Italian Risorgimento. Rather uncommon.

Better known as *Confessioni d'un italiano*, it was translated into English as *The Castle of Fratta*. Both volumes are untrimmed and bound in fine early 20th Century French three-quarter red morocco with raised bands, marbled paper boards and endleaves, with additional laid paper endleaves. Volume 2 also includes the original rear wrapper. Light scattered foxing and toning, a handsome near fine set.
