Despite these flaws a very clean and unmarked copy of this photobook classic. 10.5 x 8.75 inches. 500 full-bleed black-and-white reproductions. Original printed wrappers. "Ohara's obsessive recording of tightly framed single faces snapped on the streets of New York represents an attempt to bring mankind together, much as cavemen represented animals on their rock walls to ensure good hunting... these photods deny the individuality of their subjects to make a wider social observation" (Parr & Badger I:291). Quite the contrary, really. The 500 faces seen in sequence defy homogeneity and illuminate difference and distinction. Unpaginated approximately 500 pgs. Wrappers lightly worn to the extremities with some light creasing present to the spine. Book is free of ownership marks. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. Illustrated with full-page reproductions of Ohara's close-up portraits. Ken Ohara (1942) is a Japanese photographer. Ohara is most noted for his series of photographs titled One, in which he presents faces with a standard size and tone. Ohara moved from Tokyo to New York City in 1962, and came to public attention in 1970 with the publication of One, which contained more than 500 tight close-ups of faces. In the 30 years since then, Ohara has continued his portrait studies in greatly varied forms E-133; 4to 11" - 13" tall .

A striking collection of black and white photographs of extreme close-up portraits with the sole focus on faces. An about near fine copy with a couple of small spots to the fore edge and some very minor wear to the corners in a very good plus dust jacket with some fading to the spine, a small tear and some minor loss to the top of the spine, a small crease to the top of the front panel and some other very minor wear. Still, a very nice copy of this elusive book. (Parr & Badger v1, 291).

First Edition. Thick quarto. A catalogue of faces, shot on the streets of New York where the Japanese-born photographer was an apprentice to Richard Avedon. The uniformity of the images, both in layout and tonal quality, suggest either a dystopian hegemony or a utopian heterogeneity. (Parr / Badger, v1, 291; Open Book 266-267; Auer 515).

A fully-illustrated collection of 500 black-and-white portraits captured on the streets of New York, where the Japanese-born photographer was an apprentice to Richard Avedon and Hiro. Printing the portraits with the same tonal quality, and thus blurring differences in skin color, "Ohara has taken the utopian step of using the camera to turn humankind into one big melting pot, his serial photographs making almost ritual atonement for the sin of racism" (Parr / Badger, v1, 291).
