Very light foxing to pages, minor rubs on spine and at corners , corners slight inturned, bookplate both volumes, owner's inscription in volume 1, sound bindings, inside edge of boards are decorated, a nice set.

This work includes 'Alcibiades', 'Don Carlos, Prince of Spain', 'Titus and Berenice', 'Friendship in Fashion', 'The Soldier's Fortune', 'The Atheist', 'The Orphan', 'The History and Fall of Caius Marius', and 'Venice Preserved', as well as several letters and poems. Thomas Otway was a English playwright of the Restoration period. Otway was intended to become a priest, however when his father died he decided to follow his passion of play writing, moving to London and falling in love with the actress Elizabeth Barry. The orphan. The history and fall of Caius Marius. Venice preserved. Poems and letters. Neatly rebacked, preserving original marbled calf covers, and with nicely executed designs in gilt and blind on the new spines. Marbled endpapers. Some rubbing to edges of boards, with a little fraying at corners.

Frontispiece portrait of the author. -- Hardcover, beautiful 3/4 tan leather over marbled boards, raised spine bands with elaborate gilt decoration, with top-edge-gilt and marbled endsheets, heavy rag paper. Condition: near fine (small scuff spots, light corner wear showing boards--pages bright and binding tight).

An important restoration dramatist his plays have in the last 30 years come back into fashion the cynicism & obsenity often found in his works suited to modern taste.
