Original embossed brown cloth. 17 x 12 cm. Professionally rebacked in brown cloth with the lower half of original spine laid down; original endpapers retained. Tiny marginal chip to one leaf of the table of contents and tiny tears to another, in neither case approaching the text, else very good. Minor marginal foxing to the frontispiece, not affecting the photograph; faint foxing to the title page and a few scattered spots elsewhere, but a clean copy overall. House in custom-made cloth slipcase with gilt-lettered green morocco spine label. Early bookseller's ticket (John Mowat, Dublin) on rear pastedown. Signature of Edward K. Dunham on front free endpaper, dated 1883. This was perhaps Edward Kellogg Dunham (1860-1922), a Harvard-trained pathologist from New York. FIRST EDITION. Brown cloth covered boards with gold spine titles; edges worn with boards exposed; external hinge split with backstrip unglued from spine, rear external hinge starting; 1/2" of crown missing with a 1/4" loss at base of spine; 12mo - over 6 3/4" to 7 3/4" tall; two gift inscriptions on and opposite of half title page; gutter cracked at half title page with first signature partially detached; oval shaped portrait frontispiece with tissue guard; pages toning; pages 138-140 have 2 small chips in edge of pages; stains found on pages 25-35, with heaviest being on pages 34-35; rear hinge intact; no internal markings; 453 pages. Clean and VG+ to Near Fine in the publisher's original bevelled, chocolate-brown boards, with bright gilt-titling along the spine and decorative blindstamping and rule to the panels. Impressive albumen, oval-shaped portrait of John Brown (the daguerrotype taken by Benjamin Battels in 1855) at the frontispiece, with his printed inscription ("Farewell God bless you Your Friend John Brown") beneath it. Light, forgiveable spotting at the endpapers and pastedowns, very light foxing to the preliminaries. One of the key early assessments of John Brown's life, including reflections on his martyrdom by the renowned transcendentalist Ralph Waldo Emerson and the noted abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison, among others. Also includes a post-Harper's Ferry interview with Brown, as he was preparing for his inevitable execution.
