Description:
London: John Murray, 1840. Sixty-fourth edition. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece and nine engraved plates, thick 12mo, pp liv, 571, slight age-toning throughout, the plates are a little foxed with slight staining at the margins, otherwise the contents are very clean and tight, the book has probably been recased, as the sensitive yellow endpapers are very clean, otherwise this is a surprisingly good copy in the original cloth, very slightly rubbed and marked, probably professionally strengthened at the head and tail. A remarkably good copy of a book intended for daily use.. Cloth. Very Good.

Description:
London: John Murray, 1840. Cloth. Good. 7" by 4.5". Henry Corbould; Alfred Adlard. A smart copy of this very successful work on domestic cookery by Maria Rundell. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Ink inscriptions to the front free end paper. Frontispiece depicting "domestic cookery" and a further 9 plates. Collated complete. Maria Rundell (1745-1828) was an English writer. In 1805, she sent an unedited collection of recipes and household advice to John Murray, of whose family she was a friend. This is the 64th edition of Rundell's book. Her work was a huge success; around half a million copies were sold in Rundell's lifetime. The book was aimed at middle-class housewives. It offers advice on economical food preparation, medical remedies, and how to set up a home brewery, and includes a section entitled "Directions to Servants". The book contains an early recipe for tomato sauce and the first recipe in print for Scotch eggs. In the publisher's original… Read More

Description:
London: John Murray, 1840. Hardback. pp. liv, 571. Black & white engravings. Sympathetically rebound in linen conserving original spine. Full of helpful observations on household management and sections on cookery for the poor and directions to servants. One of the most popular cookbooks during the first half of the nineteenth century. Book in very good condition. End papers lightly soiled. Book seller's ticket to front pastedown. Some toning and spotting to paper - mostly affecting the introductory section. Light sporadic spotting and occasional mark. A few pages 'dog-eared' and some light pencil marks here and there. The text block is still very sound and perfectly readable and the contents are often highly entertaining. Overall, a very good copy.
