Text is lightly worn with no significant flaws, save for original owner's red pen markings in the margins affecting about 30+ pages. Dust jacket is not price-clipped, but has some edge-wear, edge-tears and some loss to the read fold over. A respectable copy.

Edmonton: Hurtig Publishers, 1972. Spine of unclipped dustwrapper is quite badly faded, with some wear to the edges of same. Top inch of the f/ep has been cut off (probably had a previous owner's name) but another name written below. Otherwise a good clean tight copy in crimson boards of this hard-cover book which was originally printed in 1852 dealing with the Red River settlement at what is now Winnipeg, Manitoba. This is the 1972 edition printed by Hurtig, part of their ''Canadiana Reprint'' series. 416pp, b&w frontispiece.. Hard Cover. Very Good/Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

The Scottish-born Ross retired to the Red River Settlement in 1825 after fifteen years' service in the employ of the Pacific Fur Company, the North West Company, and the Hudson's Bay Company. There he acquired a prominent and respected position in the community as a member of the council from 1835-1850 and sheriff of Assiniboia from 1839-1852. His is a lively and impartial history and account of activities in the settlement from its troubled beginnings until the relatively prosperous 1850's, with interesting observations on agricultural and social life, the fur trade, native races, emigration and future prospects, as well as a detailed description of the buffalo hunt.
