Small light library stamp at the top corner of the title page and biographical sketch. Text block is very sound, ready for rebinding. Light chipping to front edge of endpapers, else text is good to very good with nicely marbled edges. A biographical sketch on the distinguished nature of the author's life work, and an extended preface by the translator, setting the approach of the work in its context and comparing noted theories of the nature of the marvelous from a post enlightenment perspective, of the various 'tools of the trade' of magicians, priests and others through the centuries. Extensively footnoted, with a general index.

First Edition. rebound, 4 raised bands on spine, gilt lettering, half bound red leather, marbled boards, marbled end papers, 8.75" tall x 5.5" wide, Vol 1 356 pages, Vol 2 387 pages, some underlining with pencil. near fine. The occult science go back to Egypt and the priesthood which was hidden from the public eye. It compares that to the time of the author's time to the Church hidden mysteries held by the priests. The mysteries then brings up the topic of miracles. Which Thomson redacted heavily to apparent miracles instead of miracles as it touched on Christianity.
