In 1609 he set sail for the East and he spent the next year travelling in Turkey, Egypt and Palestine and later studied antiquities in Rome. His observations first appeared in English in 1615 and his text was soon regarded as a special authority on the Levant. He has been called the first 'classical tourist' of England.
