Illustrations bright and clear, with some light tanning and foxing to edges. Previous owner's inscription to title page. Some creasing to tissue guards. Boards have moderate shelf-wear with bumping and slight peeling to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Tears to leather to spine with loss of leather to top and bottom of spine. Wear marks overall. Joints heavily cracked. Gilt is bright.

An attractively illustrated edition of Shakespeare's songs, produced for the Guild of Women Binders, an institution established in 1898 by bookseller Frank Karslake as "a way of publicising and promoting the sale of books bound by women" (Tidcombe, pp. 27-8). As well as the execution of fine leather bindings, the Guild had a number of fine press books specially printed for their purposes; in his introduction to The Bindings of Tomorrow (1902), G. Elliot Anstruther writes that "the Guild has no affection for the cheap edition, with its closely set type and thin paper; nor does it bind up ephemeral rubbish for treasured preservation.
