Description:
London: The New Age Press, 1908. [Essays and Criticism] VINTAGE, EARLY EDITION. Octavo (18 x 12cm), pp.[4] 104 [2]. Cream quarter cloth, brown typographic paper over boards. Lettered in gilt to spine. Top edge gilt. Publisher's advertisements to rear. Some light toning and spotting to preliminaries, rubbing to spine gilt and toning to cloth. Very good. 'The Sanity of Art' was written in response to Max Nordau's 'Degeneration' (published 1982) which criticised the fin de siècle modernist trends. However, Shaw advocates for these artists and for the individual to decide for themselves how to view the new aesthetic.

Description:
New York: Benj. R. Tucker, 1908. First edition, American issue. 114 pages. 12mo. Tan cloth. Spine slightly tanned, covers very slightly foxed, else a near fine, bright copy. First edition, American issue. 114 pages. 12mo. With the text of the last version before Shaw's final revisions. Concerining this Shaw wrote to the Ammerican publisher, Benjamin Tucker, "I suppose you will have to print your edition in the earlier and imperfect phase of the immortal work." Written at the invitation of Tucker, the editor of Liberty magazine. It first appeared in the July 27, 1895 issue of Liberty in the form of an essay-review titled "A Degenerate's View of Nordau" (Laurence C1086). Tucker observed that there had been no response from the arts community to Nordau's Degeneration, and offered Shaw the highest price ever paid to anyone for a magazine article if he would offer that response. Shaw, always a critic of the American devotion to money, accepted. Laurence A86b

Description:
New York, 1918. First edition, second American issue, using the original 1908 sheets and binding, with a cancel title page [Laurence A86b: "Published 8 February 1908, simultaneously with English edition. Unsold cloth-bound copies were taken over by Boni and Liveright and re-issued with a cancel title dated 1918. The covers, bearing Tucker's device, were unaltered."]. 12mo, tan cloth, 114 pages. Hart Crane's copy, signed by him in ink on the front flyleaf. Tan binding is lightly browned on spine, with faint small erasure mark on front flyleaf, else a fine copy. It is unclear when Hart Crane acquired this copy of "The Sanity of Art," but it should be noted that in the spring of 1918, Crane was living in New York City, and "briefly held a position as salesman in the basement of Brentano's bookstore. The job gave Crane easy access to books he wanted to read,". [Unterecker, "Voyager: A Life of Hart Crane," p. 110].
