A limited edition illustrated translation of Count Carlo Gozzi's memoir, translated by John Addington Symonds, illustrated with some colour plates. Complete in two volumes. A limited edition work, of which two hundred and ten copies were printed, this copy is numbered one-hundred and twenty-nine, with seven etchings in duplicate. The memoir of Count Carlo Gozzi, a noted Italian playwright, as well as being a champion of Commedia dell'arte, an early form of professional theatre, which he was interested in saving. Gozzi was known for his works 'L'amore Delle tre Melarance', 'Turandot', and 'La Donna Serpente'. Volume I illustrated with a frontispiece, seven colour plates, and one monochrome plate. No. 604 of 780 copies. 8vo. 23.5 by 17.5 cm. xii, [4], 371, [2], 379 pp. Contemporary full green morocco binding with fairly elaborate gilt ruling, pips, floral devices. Condition: binding heavily rubbed along joints and spine extremities. A few small abrasions on boards. Light age toning to leaves, which are otherwise clean.

Two volume set attractively rebound in three quarter leather decorated with gilt, marbled boards and endpapers. Top edge gilt. Translated into English by John Addington Symonds. Original etchings by Adolphe Lalauze. Page foredges unopened, loss of the bottom corners of quite a few pages in volume two not affecting the text, edges and corners are a bit worn, else very good to near fine.

Leather has minor rubbing at ends of spines, there is a short (1/4") tear top of spine of volume 1, a nicely engraved bookplate of the singer and biographer Dorothy Moulton Mayer on verso of front free endpaper. Some pages are unopened in volume 2 along the fore edge. 520 copies printed for England, and 260 for America; this is copy no. 158. Pages: 371 and 379 (with index); with portrait and six original etchings by Adolphe Lalauze, and eleven subjects illustrating Italian comedy by Maurice Sand, engraved on copper by A. The limited illustrated edition of John Addington Symonds' translation of the memoirs of the Italian playwright Count Gozzi. Number 87 of 210 copies with hand coloured plates. Symonds wrote a number of biographies of writers and artists, and these often reflected his interest in the Renaissance, as in this case. He was also an early advocate of homosexuality, and despite being married to a woman, he wrote poetry inspired by his homosexual affairs. Count Gozzi was born in Venice in 1720. He had to support himself due to his father's debts, so he joined the army in Dalmatia at the age of sixteen. On his return to Venice he gained a reputation as the wittiest member of the Granelleschi Society, to which he had gained entry through the publication of a number of satirical pieces.
