Sm. 8vo., First Edition thus, with half-title and title in red and black, small neat contemporary signature on blank preliminary; handsomely bound in contemporary full brown calf, sides with multiple frame borders in gilt and blind stopped at corners by rosettes, back elaborately tooled in gilt, old label missing (but all lettering entirely legible in blind), marbled edges, gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, a remarkably bright, crisp, clean copy of this most attractive edition. A CRISP COPY OF THE FIRST MODERN ACCOUNT OF THE CRUSADES IN ENGLISH. Moderate rubbing and wear to boards, being more severe along extremities. Severe water-damage and waviness to text block throughout. Engraved title page with small closed tear to fore edge. Title page with two holes to center, one to publisher's information, and one along lower edge, all inexpertly repaired. Scattered ink and pencil marginalia throughout. Thomas Fuller was a 17th-century English historian who particularly notable for his historical accounts of English worthies and the Church of England. In 1639, Fuller wrote 'History of the Holy War' – a popular book on the Crusades, taken from several notable and accurate accounts. It is curious though, Fuller wrote this work with an incredible amount of wit and humor, so much so that he included stories unrelated to the Crusades just to fill pages! According to Tyerman,
