Description:
London: Ed. J. Burrow & Co., Ltd, 1938. First edition. Preface by Lord Olivier, Governor of Jamaica, 1907-13. INSCRIBED BY TIMPSON on front endpaper, "Inscribed for Mrs. Grace Jacobs by George F. Timpson/ Third May 1946." Illustrated with full-plate black-and-white prints and photographs. "Jamaica, the oldest and most beautiful of our tropical colonies, was the great stronghold of British slavery; on her shores Christianity and the slave system met in mortal combat. The stirring story of Jamaican emancipation is told in this volume, which closes with a description of the Island today." -- from the dust jacket flap. Would appear to be a self-congratulatory story of the British enslaving the Black residents of this island nation and then stepping it back to mere colonization and exploitation. Bright and fine with spot of rubbing to tips. In very good dust jacket showing only a few small chips and tears, and with folds internally repaired/reinforced with archival tape.
