Description:
Baltimore: [the author; Printed by Lord Baltimore Press, 1951. Octavo (22 x 16 cm.), [6], 178 pages. Second Edition; first published 1950. An interesting compilation of historical and literary "evidence" against the consumption of alcohol. Turnbull, a sculptor and historian of the ancient world, pulls quotes and snippets from figures including Plato, Chaucer, Franklin, Johnson, Poe and others, many of whom more than enjoyed a tipple. In a way this is a drinker's anthology, albeit one twisted by the logic of prohibition's search for "freedom." A near fine copy, in a near fine dust jacket, with a handsome illustration of grapes. Small ownership inscription to free front endpaper.
