Description:
Washington D.C.: J. & G. S. Gideon, 1845. 8vo, printed self-wrappers. 24 pp., 14 wood engravings. Likely the first publication of the standardized Morse code-the first widely used modern data code. First Edition. This important pamphlet was published by Alfred Vail (1807-1859) after the successful test of a Congressionally approved experimental telegraph line spanning from Baltimore to Washington D.C. On 24 May 1844, Samuel F. B. Morse (1791-1872) transmitted the momentous first telegraph message-"What hath God wrought?"-through the telegraph line, using the version of "Morse code" that later became standardized in both America and Canada. On the receiving end was Vail, Morse's associate in developing the telegraph. Having worked with Morse since 1837, Vail imported letters and special characters into Morse's original experimental numeric code (which was based on optical telegraph codes) such that it could be used more generally. Vail is credited for having created the most useful and efficient…

Description:
Washington: J. & G. S. Gideon, 1845. Disbound. Octavo. 24 pages. Very Good. Lacking the original wraps. Mild browning and circular stains at fore edge of text.. Wood engravings. Vail was an engineer and inventor who collaborated with Samuel B. Morse in the development and practical application of the telegraph. Some have argued it was actually Vail who invented the telegraphic alphabet named after Morse, but Vail seems to put that to rest in this pamphlet, to wit: "This conventional alphabet was originated on board the packet Sully, by Prof. Morse..." (p. 23).<br /> <br /> Illustrated with 14 wood engravings showing the various components of the telegraphic system. Also includes one of the earliest printings of the 1844 revision of the telegraphic alphabet which, under the name "American Morse," became standard in the United States and Canada. <br /> <br /> SABIN 98292; HOWES V5.

Description:
Philidelphia: Lea & Blanchard, 1845. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. FIRST EDITION, LEONARD GALE'S COPY, of perhaps the most important book documenting the earliest history of telegraphy. Gale's work with Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail was critical to the success of the telegraph. With Gale's ownership signature on title page and front pastedown. On May 24, 1844, Samuel Morse famously sent the world's first telegraphic message: "What Hath God Wrought" from the Rotunda of the United States Capitol Building in Washington, DC to Baltimore, MD. On the other end of this transmission was Alfred Vail, the lesser known, but equally important inventor of the telegraph. Vail's contributions vastly improved upon Morse's design and were critical to the telegraph's success. Published in 1845, one year following the aforementioned successful telegraphic test, Vail's The American Electro Magnetic Telegraph describes in detail the workings of the device and its applications as well as the history of…
