Gertrude Lefferts (1824- 1902) was a prominent New York public figure. She married into the famous Vanderbilt family and dedicated her life to improving the condition of New York's African American community, though, certainly, in a very do-gooder "White Savior" kind of way. Her writings on the lives of Dutch citizens in New York was very popular and she is often overlooked as a pioneer of women's historians in the twentieth century (Brooklyn Historical Society, 2018).
