Striking limited edition of this French satire first published in 1759 in which Voltaire depicts the worst of the world and his pathetic hero's desperate effort to fit it into an optimistic outlook. This work is splendidly illustrated throughout with 62 original lithographs by Rudolf Kriesch. Moderate rubbing and sunning along edges of slipcase. Chemise with spine slightly age-toned, with minor and sporadic damp-staining. Text in German. Slipcase and chemise in overall good, binding and interior in very good condition.

Overall in excellent condition, fine copy in near fine slipcase. "Candide, ou l'Optimisme was first published in France in 1759. Tobias Smollett's translation formed part of his thirty-five-volume edition of the works of Voltaire, which was published between 1761 and 1765. This Folio Society edition follows the first edition, with minor emendations."
