With a letter from Reginald Lowe tipped-in at rear pastedown. Fine. A treatise worth reprinting for the salty sailor-humor Ward imparts in sizing up varied personnel on a given ship. This copy was sent from Reginald Lowe, MBE, long-time assistant to Geoffrey Callender, and since its inception until his death, 1934 - 1990, a steadfast officer at the National Maritime Museum, to US Navy Lt. Commander William Walcott Shea, dated 1948, as indicated in the attached letter.

"Dissected in the Character of A Ship of War as also The Characters of all the Officers, from the Captain to the Common Sailor." Ned Ward (1667 - 1731) also known as Edward Ward, was a satirical writer and publican in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century based in London. He was also an innkeeper where he encountered all nautical disciplines and documented their tales of the sea with satire.

Collated, complete with a frontispiece.This work was first published in 1707, and is scarce in any edition. It has been written by the famous satirical author Ned Ward who was best known for his survey of London 'The London Spy'.  In recent paper covered boards. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright. Scattered spotting to pages. Very Good

Grub-Street satirist and publican, Ned Ward's set of military characters, including 'A Spy', bound together with an incomplete set of his more common naval characters - 1709 and 1708. Contemporary panelled calf with two spine labels and remains of an overlaid morocco label to the second compartment. Skilful repair to the head and tail of the spine and strengthening of the corners. Pencil marks to the front pastedown; no flyleaf. Mars Stript appears second in the book, collating complete [12] pp108 (ESTC T62093); The Wooden World, 2nd edition, 1708 (ESTC T62083) comes first: [12] pp 1-36; 61-108 - lacking the C gathering. A few light pencil marks but both texts are essentially unmarked; paper showing toning throughout. PROVENANCE: Written on the rear pastedown: 'Joe Lewis 141 Southgate Road, Potters-Bar, 1938.
