Contents complete, the original end-papers, name and date 1857 to the front pastedown,all edges gilt, the gutta percha has deteriorated to leave the pages loose, the plates with tissue guards are clean and bright. A fair copy in need of a repair to the binding..

Slim 4to, vi + pp54 plus 12 circular chromolithograph plates with tissue guards surrounded by gilt decorated wreath of plants/foliage of birds habitat. Red cloth binding with gilt lettering and designs to spine and front board in very good condition with a little fading to gilt on spine and a few small marks to boards with old water damage? to back top corner, although this has not affected pages. Inside previous owners has discretely inscribed to wife on bottom back of first plate(sweet!). All pages with full edge gilt in very good/clean condition with a little intermittent foxing throughout. A very good copy of a beautiful book.

In intensely coloured roundels of about 6cms diameter, within a gilt circle, Wolf's illustrations vividly depict birds in their natural setting. Set within a wreath of gilt foliage, they are quite small on the page, but looked at closely, each is an exquisite porthole into the avian world. The page surface is, in some cases, slightly soiled: and a few of the plate pages are afflicted with the foxing often associated with this title, affecting chiefly the reverse, blank, side: most notably, the frontis (the House Sparrow), and to a lesser extent the Woodpecker and the Wagtail plates. The text pages are generally clean, with a few mild soil marks. Original cream endpapers, repaired to the gutter, with an armorial bookplate to the pastedown. All edges gilt.
