Good. hardback. hardback, octavo, bound in full blind panelled calf, raised bands to spine, no title to spine, upper joint splitting at top two inches, rubbed to extremities & with some loss at head of spine, the stamp of Trinity College, Bristol to the endpapers but no other stamps or labels, front hinge starting but the stitching of the text block remains tight, lacks the short title page and the frontis Royal Family portrait but the scarce Salter's Hall plate is present, paper age-toned, some scattered pencil markings in a light an erasable hand, [3] 384 [x] pp. Originally in weekly parts, causing great controversy at the time of publication on account of its libelous polemic against both Catholics and Nonconformists. Contemporary full polished calf binding, panelled boards, raised bands to spine, front board held by cords.. No lettering piece - though no evidence of one ever having been present, binding good with general wear and rubbing. Contents clean and tight, generous margins. A good tight copy. This work was originally issued as a weekly periodical in 43 numbers, February 4 to November 25, 1717, and then as this collected edition in 1717. It was so scandalous that Lewis had to go into hiding: he signs himself unoquivocally "I am yours, &c. The Fanatick-hater.".
