Fifth American Physical Society Topical Conference on Shock Waves in Condensed Matter was held in Monterey, California, July 20-23, 1987. The purpose of the conference was to provide a forum where scientists and engineers studying the response of condensed matter to dynamic high pressures and temperatures could exchange ideas and technical information. During the conference, papers describing the mechanical, chemical, electro-magnetic, and optical response of condensed phase materials to shock stimuli were presented and theoretical, computational, and experimental results were discussed.
