London: Duckworth and Co., 1911. First Edition, First Printing. Wrappered First TOGETHER WITH Hardcover First. Very good +. A Very Good + copy of the First Edition, first printing in the RARE PUBLISHER'S ORIGINAL WRAPPERS (some rubbing with loss to the spine panel, prior owner's name dated 1911 on the front free endpaper), being a Play by John Galsworthy, housed in a custom foldover case with the Title and Author name in gilt to the case's spine, TOGETHER WITH the hardcover copy of the same Play with some rubbing to the spine ends and leading board corners. The Play is a work of fantasy presenting the dream of a peasant girl of the Alps who has two admirers, one a Swiss guide and the other a stranger from London who wants to take her to the big city. John Galsworthy won the 1932 Nobel Prize in Literature (then died in the following January). The wrappered first edition is, in our experience, EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE. The hardcover copy is not dated by the Publisher but references the same prior… Read More

Description:
New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, [1936]. First Revised Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. Very good/very good. A Very Good copy of the second American edition, first printing -- being the first revised edition (some wear to the spine ends and tiny rubs to the leading board corners) in a Very Good dust jacket (with some general wear, toning, tiny ink insertion in the title immediately prior to "Becket", small stain to the front panel at the "D" in "MURDER"); a dramatization of the murder of Thomas Becket at Canterbury; an act which nearly cost Henry II the English Throne. In this second edition, Eliot deleted the dialogue of the three Priests which had appeared at the beginning of Part II and replaced it with a speech by the Chorus. These changes brought the text into conformity with a then-recent production of the Play at the Mercury Theatre in London. T. S. Eliot won the 1948 Nobel Prize in Literature.
