Buenos Aires: [amateur compilation], 1915. Staplebound Wraps. Scrapbook, a homemade job assembled by an interested Argentine, documenting magazine work by a number of Buenos Aires caricaturists, beginning with Alonso (1885-1945), his 15pp samples mounted recto-only (verso texts & images show through, vaguely) of portraits from the magazine Caras y Caretas (Faces and Masks), followed by many portrait clippings, all or mostly political. Find clippings by Jose Maria Coa (from Fray Mocha; note especially an excellent Teddy Roosevelt in color), 30pp; selections by Aurelio Gimenez (Fray Mocho, 2pp); Manuel Mayol (from Plus Ultra, 4pp); Enrique Schulz (9pp) plus three additional samples by other artists. The makeshift album, a brad-bound 10x7 inch coverless fascicle, is sloppy but works well enough, an as-is item without prejudice, preserves competent time-dated artwork. FYI, in 1915 Alonso won first prize at the contest of 'caricaturas personales' in Buenos Aires, selected as presenting the best such work in the local press. Political stuff: diplomats and presidents.
