Edward Berwick was born in London in 1843 and worked at a London bank before sailing to the United States to seek his fortune in 1865. This farewell letter reads in full "15 Lombard Street/London 28 June 1865/ To Mr. Edward Berwick/Dear Sir/We beg you will kindly accept/this Medicine Chest as a slight token of our esteem for/your character, and it is presented with every good/wish for your safety, health and prosperity in your/new enterprise/We are, Dear Sir/Yours truly" - signed by 17 persons, likely his banking associates. Description:
Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 2014. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo; viii, 228pp.Index. Library markings, otherwise A Fine, unread copy (small blue mark to spine). "In Abolitionist Geographies, Martha Schoolman contends that antislavery writers consistently refused standard geographical terms, instead expressing their dissenting views by appealing to other anachronistic, partial, or entirely fictional north-south and east-west axes. Schoolman reveals abolitionist literature's explicit and intentional investment in geography as an idiom of political critique, by turns liberal and radical, practical and utopian." Description:
9" x 7." Color engraving adhered to cream colored pasteboard. Near fine (colors may be a bit faded). The presidential portrait of Lincoln is in an oval setting surrounded by pictorial images (most likely designed by W. Momberger) in each corner symbolic of important issues during Lincoln's presidency. Research indicates this is the J.C. Buttre Memorial Engraving of Abraham Lincoln, a half-length portrait of Lincoln taken from an image originally produced by Anthony Berger at Mathew Brady's studio in Washington, D.C.

Octavo; [x], 204pp. A Fine copy in like dust jacket (with a short closed tear to upper rear edge) of the First Edition wtih a unique association. Drs. Pusey and Sterling, as Presidents of arguably the two most influential academic institutions in the country, each were directly confronted with the student protest movement in the late 1960's and the end of innocence. At Stanford, demonstrators occupied the Old Student Union Building vowing to remain until their demands were met. Dr. Sterling ultimately accepted a faculty committee's recommendations for leniency ‘with serious misgivings.' Soon, at Harvard, protesters, led by the radical Students for a Democratic Society, took over… Read More
