London: William Pickering, 1848. First edition, this copy with signed presentation by Evans in ink at the front pastedown to the Library of the [Royal] Archaeological Institute. 16mo, xvii & 116 pp. Publisher's maroon cloth lettered in gilt & decorated in blind. All edges gilt.
Ex-library with the small rubber-stamped mark of the Royal Archaeological Institute in the margins of several pages, brief edge wear, moderately soiled, spine & margins browned, occasional minor foxing, bookplate of V.S.M. de Guinzbourg at the ffep with attendant glue stain on the verso, a good or better copy.
Post-Archaelogical Institute, this title ended up in the collection of Lt. Colonel Victor de Guinzbourg who served in the Counter-Intelligence Corps during World War II as a liaison officer with the French Foreign Legion & as political adviser to General Alexander M. Modest edge wear including a tiny loss & some scuffing at the front cover of part 1, internal toning, otherwise very good.
A pirated edition quite probably actually issued in London, originally published in 1954;
Espionage, intrigue, royalty, multiple partners, this the only erotica fiction from the pen of an accomplished poet who apparently needed the money.

Garden City, New York: Doubleday & Company, 1949. First edition, this a presentation copy inscribed, signed & dated in ink by Liebling at the ffep to Alger & Priscilla Hiss. 8vo (8.25" x 5.75"), 251 pages. Publisher's cloth-patterned yellow paper over boards lettered in brown on the spine, lacking the dust jacket.
Spine darkened, soiled, upper joint splitting, shallow loss at spne extremities, corners bruised & rubbed through, a worn but historically significant copy.
"For Alger and/ Priscilla Hiss,/ Joe Liebling,/ with friendship./ July 14, 1949."
The second collection of Liebling's articles critical of New York newspapers which were originally published in the NEW YORKER, this copy presented to Hiss & wife exactly one week after his first trial ended in a hung jury. During the course of the trial Liebling formed a warm friendship with the defendant, & thereafter aggressively criticized the House Un-American Activities Committee.

Philadelphia: Dorrance & Company, (1972). First edition, this copy inscribed, signed, & dated in ink in the year of publication at the first blank page by Colonel Booth. Octavo (8.5" x 5.75"), 168 pages. Publisher's black lettered tan cloth, in pictorial dust jacket.
Top corners bruised, minor foxing mostly at the edges of the text block, otherwise very good in very good lightly soiled & foxed dust jacket, with brief edge wear including a short closed tear & a couple of nicks.
The author was the commanding officer of the Proust program which sent French military personnel recruited by the Office of Strategic Services (predecessor to the C.I.A.) to France to produce intelligence for the Allied invasion at Normandy. This copy is inscribed "with thanks" to Carroll Godwin who was news director, anchorman and talk show host at WCSC- Channel 5 in Charleston, South Carolina.
