Boston: Privately Printed by The Chapple Publishing Company, Ltd., 1915. First edition. Octavo (9.5" x 7"), xvi & 410 pages, with frontis & 92 illustrations from photographs on 16 plates. Publisher's green cloth lettered & decorated in gilt, with a photographic illustration applied to the front cover. Laid-in is a signed form letter on the author's letterhead with "My Esteemed Boy Scout" as salutation.
Spine gilt dull, binding lightly soiled, brief wear at corners, text toned in the margins, otherwise a very good or better copy.
An uncommon book in which the author presents in two sections the diaries of his hunting trips in Africa. The first excursion, in 1911, was to the Guaso Nyero region of British East Africa, the second, in 1913, to northwestern Rhodesia. Barre, Massachusetts: Barre Publishers, 1964. First edition, limited to 1500 copies, with "All royalties for the benefit of the Quebec-Labrador Mission Foundation." Octavo (9.25" x 6.25"), [8], 111, & [1] pages, illustrated. Publisher's yellow/ tan cloth lettered in gilt on the spine, with pictorial device of a fishing net in gilt on the upper cover, in slipcase with an applied, printed title label on the front panel.
Small spot near the top of the spine, previous owner's bookplate at the verso of the first blank page causing staining from mounting glue evident on the recto, otherwise Very Good in like slipcase, lightly soiled, with a couple of dings at the edges.
This copy from the collection of Mary & Bert Tilt with their "Hunting - Fishing" bookplate. The author was a wealthy investment banker, avid angler and gifted writer.

Binding moderately rubbed & soiled, brief fraying at spine extremities, corners bruised (one rubbed through), hinges started, text block cracked in a couple of places (still secure), gift inscription at ffep, text moderately toned, Good or so. Author John Sergeant Wise, son of Virginia Governor Henry Wise, served with the VMI Corps of Cadets at the Battle of New Market during the Civil War.As noted in the Dictionary of Virginia Biography, Diomed "was a pioneering effort in what soon became a popular literary genre. Written as if in the voice of Wise's favorite hunting dog, it was extremely popular and featured many anecdotes of Wise's life, particularly his love of hunting birds and small game."

Soft vertical crease throughout, brief annotation in red pencil at the upper margin of the front cover, lightly soiled, staples rusted, otherwise very good.
Author Kirk presents a fascinating history of the club which was actually a social organization with no connection to hunting. Pooshee Plantation, where many club meetings were held, succumbed to the creation of Lake Moultrie in 1939.

Twenty-six volumes, I through XXVI (of 28), octavos (8.75" x 6.25"), variously paginated, each volume illustrated with plates from paintings, engravings, etchings, drawings, photos, maps, etc., including frontispieces, with tissue-guards. Publisher's three-quarter crushed dark blue morocco & marbled paper over boards by Haddon & Company (signed), the spines in six compartments separated by raised bands, lettered or decorated in gilt in all compartments. Top edges gilt, the others uncut.
Occasional very minor rubbing mostly affecting raised bands, one volume with slight wear at the top of the spine, a bit of toning to marbled paper, hinge started in volume one (still secure), otherwise near fine.
