Publisher's full brown leather, the spine in five compartments separated by raised bands, elaborately lettered & decorated in gilt. All edges gilt, ribbon marker sewn in, moire fabric endpapers.
A Fine & apparently unread copy.
A nice copy of Drury's stunning novel which was characterized by Jonathan Karl as a "compelling portrait of American social and political history." The book was awarded the 1960 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

Light edge wear along the folded side, small loss just touching text affecting pp. 5/6, otherwise Very Good. A supporter of George McClellan, Ticknor writes in part: "No more awful spectacle can be contemplated than that of a great, powerful and energetic nation, who have no rule of action but the rule of a written Constitution, and who have lost their fidelity to its requirements. We have been so situated through three whole years of Civil War, that it has been in the power of extreme and violent men to denounce a pure and high regard for the limitations of our fundamental law as treason to the Union ..." The author, who was co-counsel for Dred Scott, concludes his essay with a series of "Mottoes fot the Campaign" selected from the writings of McClellan.

Washington, D.C.: W.D. Wallach. Lot of 9 issues, broken run: Volume xiv, numbers 2058, 2061, 2062, 2073, 2076, 2077, 2078, 2079, & 2098, September, October, & November, 1859. First editions, original broadsheet newspapers, single sheets measuring 22 inches by 29 inches folding once vertically forming 4 pages each.
Old folds, tattered, creased, some losses (text mostly unaffected), small rubber stamp in the margins, good or so & still quite useful.
The Washington Evening Star was founded in 1852 by Captain Joseph Borrows Tate. In 1853, Tate sold an interest to William Douglas Wallach who became sole owner in 1855. Thereafter, he shortened the name to the Evening Star and introduced the Sunday edition. The paper was noted for coverage of the Civil War and was long the paper of record for the Nation's Capital. After a run of 128 years, publication ceased in 1981.
