In a ministerial career spanning nearly half a century, he notably served as Home Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer and was three times Lord President of the Council. Active in Whig politics, he consistently championed the cause of Catholic Emancipation, and yet also sympathized with advocates for the abolition of slavery which the church had practiced for centuries. He was also a proponent of Popular Education.
