In a ministerial career spanning nearly half a century, he notably served as Home Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer and was three times Lord President of the Council. Active in Whig politics, he consistently championed the cause of Catholic Emancipation, and yet also sympathized with advocates for the abolition of slavery which the church had practiced for centuries. He was also a proponent of Popular Education. Here, after an engaging preface promising to 'box the ears' of the body politic, Fitzmaurice pens a satirical poem depicting the seven day arrival of a comet and its effect on activities and hypocricies of that body in the face of certain doom.…
