Chapter heads are decorated with floral devices, as are first letters. "To which is added, AN ESSAY ON THE DIFFERENT CAUSES OF PESTILENTIAL DISEASES, AND HOW THEY BECOME CONTAGIOUS: WITH REMARKS ON THE INFECTION NOW IN FRANCE, by John Quincy, M.D. Paper shows peripheral toning, never heavy. This copy does not include the fold-out "Table of Funerals" for the parishes of London. It is supplied in facsimile. Hodges (1629-1688) first wrote his account of the plague in Latin in 1672. John Quincy translated it into English in 1720, adding an essay on spread of the plague to France. Hodges was one of the few physicians who remained in London during 1665, to record observations and test the effectiveness of various treatments. Paper is toned, rarel light staining. 79 conditions and maladies of the horse and their remedies are listed; among them a "pissing ball" to promote urine- rosin three ounces, three ounces of salt of prunel, a sirup of marsh mellows on eounce, oil of turpentine three drachms. Housed in a custom cloth chemise and slipcase with black leather spine label. Quite an unusual manual on the care of horses, rare to have survived in this condition. . This first collected edition of Moore's poems, published at the request of his children, contains the first book appearance of his poem, "A Visit From St. Nicholas" ("Twas The Night Before Christmas") in a collection of his own work. This rare first edition is a PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by Moore on the half-title page, "The Rev. Dr. Barry, with the respects of the author, Mar. 1846". Moore, a professor of Hebrew, wrote this poem in 1822 as a Christmas gift for his children. A house guest copied it in the fall of 1823, and later sent her copy to the editor of the Troy (NY) Sentinel, where it was first published anonymously, December 23, 1823. Van Gulik translated this rather obscure treatise, "A Chinese Treatise on Scrolls and Forgers, Shu-Hua-Shuo-Ling", written by Lu Shih-hua, an 18th century collector who devoted his life to the collecting of antique books and pictures. The "Scrapbook" is presented in complete translation, together with an introduction, notes, and a reprint of the Chinese text. Errata sheet at the conclusion with one typed addition glued in. Robert Van Gulik (1910-1967) was a Dutch diplomat, orientalist, musician, and writer best known for his Judge Dee mysteries.
