New York: Selmar Hess This heavy volume was one of a series of books on geography, history, and travel published by Selmar Hess of New York. Although undated, my research of similar volumes in this series indicates that it was published between 1866 and 1875. It's notable for hundreds of beautiful mid-19th Century illustrations, many of which are engravings with original tissue guards. However, the illustrations with tissue guards often have foxing, particularly in the margin areas, possibly as a result of acidity in the tissue guards themselves. The other illustrations and pages are mainly free of foxing. Countries and cities featured in this particular volume (Volume 4), include Norway; Tripoli; St. Petersburgh, Russia; Lebanon including Beyrut (Beirut) and the Cedars of Lebanon; Mexico; New Caledonia (French); Portugal; Athens, Greece; The Bermudas; West Indies; British Guiana; Isthmus of Panama; and Denmark. North Dighton, Mass.: JG Press, 1998. The handsome volume is in As New condition with an As New dust jacket. I've placed the dust jacket into a Brodart protective sleeve. The book is set up in chronological order to give a history of pharaohs from pre-dynastic times through all 30 dynasties and then through pharaohs that reigned during the Perian Macedonian, Ptolemaic, and Roman periods. The book includes a listing of pharaohs and an Index. However, it is the full-color photographs throughout that make this book a handsome addition to anyone's shelf. This particularly decorative volume was part of Doubleday-Doran's "Malay Edition," which had uniform bindings of Conrad's various writings and was published four years after the author's death. The book was bound in black cloth with a yellow vignette drawing of a ship on the front panel and yellow titles on the front panel and spine. There is only light shelf wear to the spine tips and corners. The book includes an illustrated front endpaper map in black on a yellow background with the heading, "The Voyages of Joseph Conrad, Master Seaman." It was only after long periods of establishing friendships with these people that this book was able to come into being. New York: Hurst & Company, 1892. This beautifully illustrated volume is mainly a reading copy. All pages are present and the text pages are in very good condition without stains, tears, or foxing. However, there is a center hinge split causing a number of the folios to be semi-unattached. There are also front and rear hinge splits and the covers are still attached but separating from the binding at the rear. The illustrated cover shows severe rubbing at the corners, darkening at the edges and fraying at the spine tips. There is all-edge gilt. Since the pages themselves are in such nice shape, this volume would be stunning if it were rebound. And the pen, ink, and pencil drawings throughout are truly exceptional, as well as is the text, which provides a wonderfully entertaining journey throughout Germany as it was in the late 1800s.
