Description:
London: George Allen & Unwin, 1949. First edition, first impression, pp.648, many illustrations, some in colour, 9 folding maps on seven sheets, and 6 folding genealogical tables. A very good copy in lightly soiled original cloth. Corners bumped, occasionally very lightly foxed. One of the most important accounts of Bedouin nomadic life around the Arabian Gulf by British administrator Lieutenant Colonel Harold Richard Patrick Dickson (1881-1959). Dickson served as British official in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Kuwait from 1919 until 1941. This work was the first, and only biographic, book he wrote on the now endangered way of life of the northern Arab Gulf. This work is considered 'monumental' in preserving Bedouin life and history, especially because Dickson recounts the detailed family and tribe relations he witnessed and heard in the oral histories told over evening campfires. He credits his friendly relations with the Bedouins to the circumstances around his nursing. He was…

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown; and Black, Kingsbury, Parbury and Allen; sold by J. Booth, [1811]-1821. First edition. Three volumes in four, 4to (27.5 x 21 cm.), pp.xvi, 606, [6, notes], large hand-coloured folding map; xvi, 716; xv, 483; (485)-998. A very good set in contemporary embossed cloth, gilt titles on spine. Professionally re-cased, heads and tails of spines repaired. Old wax seals on spines. A remarkably comprehensive chronicle of the history of Islam from the death of Muhammad to the accession of Emperor Akbar, drawing on Price's own translations from Persian sources, particularly Mirkhand, Khandamir, and Abu'l-Fazl. This was the first such chronicle published in English, and contemporary reviewers noted Price's methodical scholarship and his history's ambitious span. As a clear narrative history, with Hijri and Gregorian dates conveniently printed in the margins, it had no contemporary equal and remained a foundational text for English scholars of Islam…

Occasional later pencil annotations. An unpublished Latin translation of the grammatical muqaddima or introduction to the 17th-century Persian dictionary Farhang-i Rashidi, completed in 1654 and dedicated to Shah Jahan. Description:
Halle : Lippert & Schmidt, 1846. First edition, pp.51, lithographed Persian text. An very good copy in modern half calf, cloth boards, interleaved and heavily annotated in both Latin and Persian in a contemporary hand, probably Spleith's. Title page foxed, and occasional spotting elsewhere. This first publication of the introduction to the seventeenth-century Persian dictionary Farhang-i Rashidi, completed in 1654 by the learned poet Abd al-Rashid (b.Abd al-Ghafur al-Husayni al-Madani al-Tattawi, d. 1658) and dedicated to Shah Jahan, was the first appearance in print of any part of the Farhang-i Rashidi. The introduction by al-Rashid was one of the earliest serious attempts to describe the grammar of Persian, and the subsequent dictionary, though not present here, is considered one of the most authoritative, reliable, and complete Persian dictionaries. Ludwig Splieth, a German orientalist, also translated the introduction into Latin but it was never published. COPAC shows 4 copies only in…

A very good set in original gilt and blind decorated cloth, gilt lettering to spines. Spines slightly sun faded, and corners and spines slightly bumped. Wide margins untrimmed. London: G.G. and J. Robinson, 1789. First edition, 4to, pp.[vi], 327, [1, directions to the binder]. With a folding map and 6 engraved plates, 1 of which folding. A very good copy in contemporary speckled calf, neatly recased. Faint rubbing to extremities, light foxing to first few leaves. A couple notes to margins by a previous owner. A fascinating account by Elizabeth Craven (1750-1828), a leading lady of her day, made up of letters to her then illicit partner Charles Alexander, Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach (1736-1806). Craven was a controversial figure: at the age of 16 she had been forced to marry William Craven, 6th Baron Craven. Both were open about the numerous affairs they had with different partners and their dislike for each other. They split permanently, while still married, when Elizabeth was just 29 and already mother of seven children. It was not long after that she and Alexander started their relationship, but they could only marry in 1791 after William Craven died. These letters…

Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1952-59. First edition. Two volumes, folio (46 x 36 cm), pp.xxvi, 290, 125 plates, 173 illustrations and plans, large folding map in 2 sheets; pp.xxiv, 300, 127 plates, 151 illustrations and plans. Volume I is 175 of 550 copies, Volume II is 107 of 550 copies. A fine set in original cloth, with rather torn and frayed dust-jackets. These volumes "remain essential instruments of knowledge in the field of early Islamic art and architecture... and the best that the field can offer to others" in Oleg Grabar's assessment in Muqarnas (Vol. 8, 1991, p.1), words which remain as true today as then. Grabar noted too that this edition, with the volumes "in their imperially gigantic original form" was physically unequalled by subsequent abridgements and revisions. Creswell's magnum opus has attracted criticism for its pose of scientific neutrality but its depth of detail and documentation remains unmatched. The first volume covers: The Rise of the…
