The 254 chromolithographic plates are all very good and with the original tissue guards a few marked; half-title & title pages. Original two-tone green cloth binding with gilt lettering, very good with a little general wear and rubbing only. Contents clean and tight, inscription in ink to the top of the half title dated 1904, original end-papers toned and a little brittle around the edges, slight spotting to title page and the odd page edge, some rusting to staples running down the spine of the first few gathers, plates clean. Privately bound polished calf prize binding by Relfe Brothers of London for Llandaff Cathedral School, gilt vignette to the front board of the cathedral, gilt decoration to the spine and boards, spine label missing, a little general wear. Contents clean and tight, prize plate dated 1908 signed by the head of the time on the front pastedown, ornate marbled endpapers, gilt dentelles, hinges good and strong, light foxing to a few tissue guards and text pages, all plates uneffected and clean.. A very good copy..

Original brown boards, text in dark brown to front board and spine, some general wear, corners bumped, cloth dust soiled. Contents clean and tight, no inscriptions. A good complete copy. (Bibliographic note: this work was issued in a number of different formats and over many years, later editions being significantly enlarged, this edition was was probably a cheaper edition of the first or at least a very early edition - it was issued as part of Routledge's Cheap Series - the series ran to over 230 volumes many of which are now rare and virtually impossible to obtain).

The accompanying letterpress has been neatly numbered in pencil (possibly by the publisher as we are aware of other copies paginated thus). Publisher's half maroon morocco with marbled boards and end papers,top edge gilt, the wrappers to the original four parts have been bound at rear . Binding a little rubbed, with slight chipping to the leather at the head and tail of spine, but a very presentable copy . Contents clean and tight, a little foxing and spotting but more or less confined to the text and original wrappers, more noticeable to the endpapers and first and last few pages, the upper margins of a few plates slightly marked.
