Tommy and Tuppence who appeared first as a young couple in Christie's 'The Secret Adversary' (1922) and later in 'Partners in Crime' (1929) and 'N or M' (1941)
are now elderly in this work and they visit Tommy's aunt Adda in a retirement home. Here Tuppence coincidentally meet Mrs. Lancaster who asked her the following mysterious question:

He grew up in the area around Monterey, California and was an avid book collector all of his life. He is well known for his bibliographies of Arthur Machen and John Steinbeck.
