Near fine condition; slightly wrapped cover edges, creaser across bottom right corner of front cover, rappers show minor soiling, brown round damp stain on the back cover (presumably tea cup trace); internally perfect condition.
The most outstanding example of Lithuanian photomontage cover designs in black, red and white by R. Vosylius.
Present book is author's second collection of satirical poems after "3 Granadieriai" (Three Grenadiers), which parodies the symbolists and romantics. In "13" he deepens and refines the same direction and revals himself as a striking master of parody and satire, where masterfully modeled not only choosen characters, but also rhythms, sounds, writing style by using hyberloles in the type of comic grimaces. "13" is the greatest author's quest to expose ritualized cultural authority. The book's name is given because of 13 poets, whom each verse is parodying. This list represents a Parnassus of modern Lithuanian literature, most prominent representatives of different… Read More

Print run 2,000 copies. Near fine condition; cover shows slight soiling, several minor chippings along fore-edge of front cover, very slight trace of moisture to the upper part of back cover; internally occasional foxing and fingerprints.
The debut collection of poems by respected teacher Jaan Kurn (1893-1981) and simultabeously the most scandalous poet of the time Ralf Rond (pseud) known for his radical leftist views. Rond's the most significant merit as a poet is that he was first to introduce Mayakovsky to Estonian public. Published by a small publishing house in Narva, the book included 22 author's original poems with visible futurist inclinations written under Mayakovsky influence and 5 translations of Mayakovsky's works. Thus, it was titled just according to the number of poems included. One month after the book went on sale, it was arrested and unsold circulation was slated for burning, the author was accused with indecent content and brought to trial.
The central theme of the poems are… Read More

Andrejs Kurcijs's radical left art and literary circle "Active Art" was one of the few elaborated modernism manifestoes in the Latvian intellectual milieu. It is a kind of theoretical treatise of activism which deals with problems of both European and Latvian art, including visual art. The conception of Activism is is closely related to formalism - artistic form is that enduring element that excites the viewer with aesthetic means and depends on intellectual effort, contrary to stagnant and conservative academic traditions of representational art and passivity of… Read More

Very goodcondition; cover shows slight soiling, creases across cover corners, damaged spine ends; internally fingerprints on the outer corners of the sheets throughout the book, possessory signature on the title page.
The fourth book of poems (of five published) by Juozas Tysliava (1902-1961), a young Lithuanian poet (sometimes reffered as Lithuanian Mayakovsky), member of the Keturi vėjai (Four Winds) group influenced by futurism. While studying journalism in Paris he published two issues of a multi-language avant-garde journal MUBA in 1928. In 1932 settled in the United States.
In Tysliava's verse neo-romantic tradition and futurist innovation go together. His poems combine the lyricism of nature with urban motives. The poems are not subordinate to one content, but slide from one subject to the other. Often only the sound, rhythmic structure connects the lines and manages a transition that syntax or logic would not accomplish.
This peculiarity of verse is particularly evident in the current… Read More

Arthur Holitscher (1869–1941) was a German novelist and essayist. But the genre that finally earned him his reputation was the travelogue. Throughout all his works, Holitscher kept a focus on the correlation between cultural, economical, and social conditions, taking the standpoint of a revolutionary socialist. That's why his works were regularly published in the USSR.
First edition of the "Der Narrenbaedeker" (Fools' Baedeker) was published on German in 1925 with a planned print run of 4,500 copies, but after losing a lawsuit with the travel guide publisher Baedeker the book was withdrawn from sale. It was replaced by the "Der Narrenführer durch Paris und London" (Fool's Guide through Paris and London) published in 1928.

Description:
Fine condition; wrapped bottom edge of the wrappers, bookstore markings on the back wrapper; internally inscribed by the authors on the half-title to Estonian leftist avant-garde writer Aleksander Antson. "Bumerang" is the second avant-garde literary collection of poetry and prose issued by a literary group of three young Estonian authors – Erni Hiir, Johannes Schütz (Juhan Sütiste) and Mihkel Jürna, formed in 1925 to express their dissatisfaction with the current state of literature. The authors, as well, as their work, are radical in worldview, opposed to the existing social order, prevailing traditions and modern culture of hedonism, proclaiming humanity, fraternity and peace. In comparison with the first jointly published compilation "Sang" (1925), the current work is more extravagant in content and eye-catchingly constructivist ("konstruit" as marked inside the book) in design. Someone from writing circles said, that the contents is also actually "konstruit". The work attracted attention,… Read More

The action of the dramatic play "...set in the city with its stone buildings, crowds, shouts, and noises, it presents a series of soliloquies by a futurist poet (Lirik), who is interrupted by numerous arguing or admiring people, machines, and objects. This book by Lev Fridland is based on his memories of the events that were happening during the years of Civir War in Russia, namely since the end of 1917 until the middle of 1919. Fridland had no political sympathies, he was far from the class struggle and the commitment of any ideology. He was a doctor, a very good and diligent doctor, for whom patients were not divided into "whites" adn "reds". But the time when he lived, and the place where he lived had pulled him into a deperate cycle... He was sent to the military hostipal in Nizhne-Chirskaia, located on the Upper Don. He remained there after the White retreat to treat many wounded left behind who could not be evacuated. Under the Reds,… Read More

This unique poetry book depicts (in accordance with its title) the first decade of the Republic of Estonia. Critical attitudes towards existing regime and reality of the early capitalism are expressed in the sharpest tone, but at the same time, remarkable an innovative poetic from, and conteptualism in the context of a later artistic culture. Here included one of the key texts of Estonian avant-garde lierature, the poem "E. V.-r.", an example of concrete poetry, in which the typographical arrangement of words divided into two plans. In the light of the historic importance the fundamental meaning carries author's statement to this poem named as instead of the poem's motto: "For the first time the independence of the Republic of Estonia was proclaimed in Pärnu. Author's inscription on the fly-leaf. Limited edition book, current copy no. 66. Brilliant collection of the Avant-Garde parody by Benediktas Babrauskas refers to the alternative narrations, which provoked the national metanarrative of the Lithuanian literature. Babrauskas' narrative type, which was frequently called anarchistic, not only excluded the shortcomings of the national metanarrative, but also presented the synchronic case of researching the literature. The collection includes 53 parody and satirical poems, and the last piece of the book is a parody of Liudas Gira's critics. Eminent Lithuanian writers and poets get mocked in the book: Balys Sruoga, Putinas (Vincas Mykolaitis), Kazys Boruta, Bernardas Brazdžionis, Ignas Šeinius, Juozas Banaitis, Maironis, Kazys Binkis, Juozas Tysliava, Vincas Kreve, Teofilis Tilvytis and many others. Anarchy appears not only in the content but also in the design.… Read More

Current collection of poems is substantially different from the other works of this genre. Originating as an unique experiment by two avant-garde poets Juozas Kruminas and Danas Pumputis, in which they wanted to create a kind of literary rebellion denying the importance of inspiration, phenomenos of Muse and Parnassus. An experiment took place at Konrad Cafe. Each of the poets had to write a poem on the theme proposed by the guests, so that writing would not have lasted longer, than an hour. Were written twenty poems by each author, the shortest amount of time spend on writing was 30 minutes, the longest - one hour. Contents of the book includes all the topics and their suggestors, also time of writing by each poet. Themes were very diverse and interesting. Among themes suggestors were prominent… Read More

According to author's foreword, his present (the fourth) volume consists of three parts. The first and the second parts contain poems written under the "storm and pressure" of Polish Futurism from 1918 to 1922, many of which were published before in various periodicals ("Formisci", "Jednodniówka futurystycana", "Nué w biuhu", "Zwrotnica", "Reflektor"), but were not included in earlier poetic collections. The third part comprases latest works covering the period 1932-1933. Author underlines his partial distancing from the futurism in the latest verses, providing an opportunity through the cover and title page design for double-interpretation of the collection title – with the prefix "futuro" or without. Reason of usage the term "Rhythms" in the… Read More
