It tracks the growth of the city - its mills, architecture, notable events, famous inhabitants and, of course, the whaling industry, to which 20 pages are devoted, with text, vintage photos, and artwork by Clifford Ashley. Fine condition in illustrated green wrappers, the whole bound in green buckram with gold lettering. Another copy, bound in original wrappers only. Each. Two very crowded lifeboats launched in 20 - 30 foot seas. 1700 miles in three weeks in these pea pods. Some foxing along gutter margins, probably a result of acidic glue. Bound in publisher's blue cloth over boards. Good condition.. 14 x 22 cm. xii, 173 pp. plus fold out map. b/w plates, ills.

This magnificent yacht was built by Alexander Stephen and Sons in Glasgow for James Lyle Mackay, 1st Earl of Inchcape, who happened to be chairman of the P&O - Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company. She was 2115 tons, 265 feet long, and was the most luxurious yacht ever built on the Clyde. He only got to enjoy her for a couple of years, however, as died aboard her in Monte Carlo in 1932. She was subsequently purchased by Howard Hughes and renamed "Southern Cross." These 23 photos, each of which is identified on verso, show interior and exterior passageways, compartments, engine room, galley, main staircase, and cabins. They were taken by W. Ralston of Glasgow for London brokers George Wilson & Co. Very good condition.. b/w silver prints, 9 1/2 x 11 1/2 inches, on glossy stock.

Fanciful tale of a sailor saved from cannibals by the love of the king's daughter. #108 in a limited edition of 500 copies published by the Golden Cockerell press, notable for its limited edition, handmade books. A nice souvenir of fine press printing, but this press wandered into the maritime area with a few other titles, most notable of which was the narrative of the whale ship "Essex." Tanning on blank endpapers from old glassine wrappers, else a very good copy in original cloth over decorated boards.
