Description:
Barre, MA: American Antiquarian Society, 1972. First edition thus. Hardcover. As New/as new. As new in dust jacket. Hardcover. xl+ 384 pp. Frontispiece portrait of Mather and one reproduction of a page of the original manuscript. The first publication of Mather's "The Angel of Bethesda" in more than 250 years. It puts in print the only systematic compilation of medical knowledge prepared in the Engish American colonies. It was largely ignored throughout the 19th century when the science of medicine was rapidly developing, as it is a mingling of religious, occult and physical reflections together with a great array of remedies, bizzare, benigh, and beneficial. Though usually though of as a Puritan religious figure, Cotton Mather was active in his support fo innoculation as a smallpox preventative, had a humane approach to psychotherapy, recommended the use of new drugs, and had a seminal view of modern gern theory as it applied to epidemics.
