A typewritten letter by Henry French addressed to R. M. Shackleford of Victor Mills, Hollister requesting the shipment of bran and flour. Henry French was born in Cornwall and before emigrating to California, he served in the British Navy on several vessels, including Northumberland, the largest ship in the British Navy. He was also a hero of the Sir John Franklin Rescue Expedition in the 1850s following Franklin's fateful disappearance during an Arctic exploration voyage. After moving to San Jose, California in 1874 he entered the grocery business and became one of the biggest merchants in the Bay Area.
