First Edition; with dust jacket. Describes and illustrates with line drawings the swords, pikes, bayonets and bowie knives used by the Confederate Army. This copy bears a fine inscription by the book's artist on half-title, flanked by a very attractive 4" tall watercolor of a bearded Confederate officer, hat in hand, leaning on his sword. Inscribed: "To Clayton Knight who gave unselfishly of his valuable time, advice and most helpful criticism and constant encouragement for which I'll always be grateful. With warm regards Carl Publiese." Clayton Knight (1891-1969) was a well known aviation author and illustrator. The illustrated jacket has some small edge tears, and is not price clipped. 70169

First Edition. The unsigned colored aquatints are attributed to George Cruikshank, although three of them in Cohn's copy were autographed by him as "Not by me GCk." They are possibly by Isaac Robert Cruikshank. The fourth is possibly his. An account of an interesting tour around the Low Countries at the end of the Napoleonic Wars. The color plates are of a Dutch peasant, a shrimp-catcher in swimming gear, a flying bride, and a Dutch minister exhorting his parishioners from his pulpit. A rare book in any edition, this is the Second Edition in French of an erotic novel; being the first edition with this title, and the first with the frontispiece, which Lewine, Bibliography of 18th Century Art and Illustrated Books, p, 52, says is by Bovenet after Chaillou. First published in Cologne in 1683 as Eve ressucitée ou la Belle en chemise, known by a single copy in Germany, then first published in English as Eve revived, or, The fair one stark-naked a novel (London: Printed for William Downing, 1684), also known by a single copy at Newberry Library. First Edition. Frontispiece, extra-title and two other illustrations engraved by Gilks after Phiz, four other illustrations by other artists. Humorous short stories which the anonymous author has "Dedicated to My Friend Albert Smith." Also found in publisher's red morocco cloth. This fragile issue in boards is quite scarce. A beautifully produced anonymously written poem, certainly privately printed, occasioned by bidding farewell to Todmorden, a market town and civil parish in the confluence of three steep-sided Pennine valleys, 17 miles from Manchester, Calderdale, West Yorkshire. The poem is set within a mirror-shaped design of embossed gold, incorporating the colors green, blue and red, all within a embossed gold leafy scrollwork design, green, blue and red floral designs in the corners. Ownership signature of great American mechanical engineer, Ambrose Swasey (see DAB): "Ambrose Swasey/Cleveland Ohio." With the large Swasey ex-libris depicting the "36 inch Lick Telescope," the observatory having been built by him. [ROME]. A fine series of hand colored prints, four (4) views of "Roman Ruins," so titled, and numbered 1-4 in ink in contemporary hand on versos. Each is a circular disc 4 1/2 " in diameter, hand colored, laid down on heavy laid paper, each inside an attractive identical watercolor frame, primarily of brown, with borders in pink, blue and black. Lovely objects, lovingly done, well enough to give the sense they are original watercolors.

The National Croquet Association was founded in 1879, but it wasn't until October 4, 1882, that representatives of twenty-five American croquet clubs met on the grounds of the New York Croquet Club and adopted a standard set of rules for the popular nine-wicket game. The association was active until the 1890s when the popularity of lawn tennis surged, and interest in croquet, viewed as a gambling game, diminished.
