The book comes with its original glassine dust jacket. The book is very good considering its age with a gift inscription dated November 1885 to the title page and occasional spotting to the pages. The delicate glassine jacket whilst very good is a little dusty and has a split running 11cm up the spine and 3.5 cm tear along the rear joint extending up from the foot of the spine. There is also minor loss to the spine tips. A relatively scarce Caldecott book with a scarce dust jacket. Top edge red, xii 288 (2) with 16 tipped in coloured plates with captioned tissue guards and 88 black and white illustrations. The boards are clean and bright with some fading to the spine and a little pushing to the spine tips. Internally, there is a gift inscription dated 1916 to the front free endpaper, a small 1 cm bruise to the bottom edge of p176 not affecting the image and with no loss and occasional very light marking. These items are difficult to date but it is pre 1940 and the images suggest it is earlier rather than later. A really lovely example with only a little patchy toning the covers. The binding is firm although the staples are a little rusted as would be expected in a book of this age but there is only a hint of rubbing to the spine tips. This book is in much better condition than is usually found and looks hardly read. An excellent and early and scarce addition to any Ladybird collection. Very good plus book with light toning/marking mainly to the edges, a little rounding to the corners, with slight surface loss at the bottom fore edge corner of the front cover, and rubbing to the foot of the spine. Internally there is a Christmas gift inscription dated 1891 on the inside of the front cover but otherwise the book is clean and bright. Contained within a contemporary leather wallet. Very good with a two tiny splits of 2mm where the the leather tab bends to fasten. Internally there is a bookseller's stamp to the front pastedown. Top edge gilt, other edges uncut, 252[2]pp with woodcuts by Eric Ravilious throughout. The book was produced in a limited edition of 100 which were signed by the author. This is an unnumbered, signed, presentation copy. Some toning to the spine and and the edges of the rear board. There is a little shelf wear and a hint of pushing to the bottom corners. Internally there is uniform toning to both free endpapers but otherwise the book is very clean with only very light dust making to the uncut edges.
