Anthony Lowande (1869-1937) was the youngest member of the renowned Brazilian Lowande family equestrian circus troupe when they toured Australia and New Zealand in 1877-78 with Cooper, Bailey & Co.'s circus. Tony was famous for his prowess as a daredevil somersault rider.

Abbott, August, 1908'; pp xiv, 296, 40 (publisher's catalogue, July 1907); although the condition of the book could only be rated as poor, loosely inserted is an interesting 4-page holograph letter (in fine condition) signed in full by Abbott to Major Davies at Pentonville, commenting in detail about his book, England, and prisons: 'it was a strange experience for me', writes Abbott about his observations of confinement, suggesting the benefits of 'soldiering in comparison', and asking Davies whether he should approach the Home Office in order to gain access to other such institutions. Foolscap folio (330 mm), stapled, [40] pp, roneo printed, with line-drawn illustrations; a collation comprising Chapters I - XXVII of ""Tales of New Guinea"" by Cecil and Russell Abel, which appear to have been separately issued as supplements to The Stevie Seabee newsletter (the collation was probably made shortly after the time of publication, judging by the rust on the surviving staple!); paper toned and with light foxing, otherwise well preserved. During World War Two the stories of missionary brothers Cecil Charles Abel (1903-1994) and Russell William Abel (1923-1972) were issued in conjunction with The Stevie Seabee newsletter, to both entertain and inform US marines in New Guinea. 'The Australian Government formed a shipping company after WWI which became the Australian Commonwealth Line in 1923. The company was bought by Lord Kylsant's shipping empire in 1928, his other companies included White Star Line, Shaw, Savill & Albion, and the Aberdeen Line. The name of the company was changed in 1928 to the Aberdeen & Commonwealth Line as the Aberdeen Line had been engaged in the Australian trade since 1840 and therefore had good associations with the public. Adamson Photo.'; the print has a few light surface marks and some fading and scattered ink spots at bottom right corner; the mount has scattered staining and loss at the left-hand corners. This group portrait of the staff of Lanes Motors was taken outside the firm's head office in Exhibition Street in the winter of 1924. The firm, whose factory was in Ingles Street, Fishermans Bend (South Melbourne), was founded by brothers Harry  and Robert Lane, and it became one of Melbourne's most famous and long-running car dealerships, still operating today as a Mercedes-Benz dealership in South Melbourne.

Large oblong octavo (180 x 245 mm), original pictorial wrappers (some silverfishing), staple bound, pp 58, [1], lithographic illustrations throughout, including several colour plates; pp 33-34 with loss at top corner, centre pages loosened from staples, otherwise contents sound and clean. A wonderful, profusely illustrated trade catalogue for a vast array of jewellery, watches, clocks, pens, sterling silver ornaments, travelling cases, shields and trophies, Australiana souvenirs, silver-plated tableware and presentation cutlery, barometers, compasses, telescopes, binoculars, etc. Approximate date of publication is based on the date of 1924 which is engraved on the silver trophy illustrated on page 40. Scarce. Only two copies are recorded in Australian collections (State Library of South Australia; State Library of Victoria)
