1823. Copper-line engraving with original hand-colouring. 250mm by 150mm (sheet). From Robert Sweet's 'The British Flower Garden'. Robert Sweet (1783-1835) was an English botanist, horticulturist and ornithologist. He published a number of beautifully illustrated works on plants cultivatd in British gardens and hothouses. The fine plates were mainly drawn by Edwin Dalton Smith, a botanical artist, who was attached to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. His works include Hortus Suburbanus Londinensis (1818), Geraniaceae (five volumes) (1820-30), Cistineae, Sweet's Hortus Britannicus (1826-27), Flora Australasica (1827-28) and British Botany (with H. Weddell) (1831).

On a personal comparison with Mr. Pattison, the governor of the Bank of England, Mr. Spring Rice, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, is sadly deficient ; while of Mr. Pattison there is a surplus of the † too too solid flesh. Of the condition of the Bank itself, it would he obviously improper to say anything ; but that the Exchequer was in a state of deficiency, all through the Chancellorship of Mr. Spring Rice, is notorious.' 1795. Copper-line engraving. 70mmm by 60mm (platemark) 225mm by 120mm (sheet). Abraham Cowley (1618-1667) was an English poet. Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, his first volume of verse, Poetical Blossoms, was published in 1633 when he was fifteen and included poems written from the age of ten. As a Royalist during the English civil wars he was deprived of his Cambridge fellowship in 1643. He joined King Charles I at Oxford before following Queen Henrietta Maria to France as her secretary. On the Restoration she granted him land. He studied medicine and became an MD in 1657, thereafter living in retirement, studying botany and writing essays. Faint mark within platemark of portrait.

1750. Copper-line engraving. 125mm by 100mm (platemark). The Hon.ble John Byng Esq. Admiral of the Blue, ' Admiral John Byng (1704 - 1757) was appointed Commodore-Governor of the British colony of Newfoundland in 1742. He was promoted to Rear-Admiral in 1745, and to Vice-Admiral in 1747.He is best known for the loss of Minorca in 1756 at the beginning of the Seven Years' War. His ships badly needed repair and he was relieved of his command before he could see to his ships or secure the extra forces he required. He was court-martialled and found guilty of failing to "do his utmost" to prevent Minorca falling to the French following the Battle of Minorca (1756). He was sentenced to death and shot by firing squad on 14 March 1757. Slight cockling to the sheet.
