London: Martin Secker, (1914). First edition, first printing. This is a near fine copy. The paper wraps are bright to the front and rear panels, with some slight creasing at the spine. The bookplate of poet Leonard Clark is affixed to the verso of the cover. There are slight spots of internal foxing, however the rough-cut text blocks are clean and crisp. This copy is free from previous owners ink and is, overall, in near fine condition.Abercrombie considers the epic form a species of literature and not a department of sociology, archaeology or ethnology. A distinct work from a Dymock poet.

The dust wrapper is finely illustrated by Robert Medley and is without notable wear aside from a slight tear at the tail of the spine. It has not been price clipped and shows the original '5s. net.' price. The boards are free from notable chips and marks. The rough-cut text blocks are free from foxing. The author's signature, inscribed to Ruth Herschberger, the author of 'Adam's Rib', reads: "For Ruth Herschberger, if she will have him. This very little kid pro quo from Conrad Aiken, March 1948". Overall, this is a near fine copy with a fine provenance.

The dust wrapper has some slight bumping at the spine tips, with one minor tear at the top right-hand corner. There are slight handling marks to the rear panel. It has not been price clipped and shows the original 12s 6d net price. The boards are sharp with some slight surface wear. The text blocks are so slightly foxed throughout, but otherwise clean. This copy proudly dons the 'From the library of writer Henry Williamson and his family' label to the front pastedown and is overall in very good (or better) condition.

The first trade edition dust wrapper is without notable signs of wear and is bright and presentable. It has not been price clipped. The publisher's cloth is without chips and marks and with gilt titling at the spine. The text blocks are bright and white throughout. The first Mermaid Edition, limited to 1000 copies, renders this copy as no.65. The author's signature is without inscription and is on the frontal free endpaper in black ink. This limited-edition copy is partnered with the true Methuen first edition. Overall, this is a near fine pair.

The boards are free from notable wear in the publisher's red cloth. The text blocks are mostly clean, with sparse spotting present.
