The most influential and important early 19th century English cookbook; first published in 1806. Bound in contemporary marbled papers over boards with a leather spine and corners. Gilded banding on the spine and a black label with gilded lettering. General wear and rubbing to edges and covers with scuffing. Internally split between 'Direction to the Binder' and 'Contents' but all pages present and attached. Title and Advertisement page trimmed at the top (1/4 inch, no impact to text or content). Some rubbing and creasing to corners and at head/tail of spine, otherwise near fine. Light brown paper over baords with orange gilded lettering on spine. Covers in fine condition. Facsimile edition of this collection of 17th century poetry, this being #48/66 on hand-made paper, out of a total of 370 numbered copies printed in England by Richard Clay & Sons, Ltd. Edited by G. Thorn-Drury. Bound in full limp vellum with gilded lettering on the side and leather strips visible close to the spine. Slots for ties close to edges, ties not present (I have not seen an example with ties being present). Minor darkening to spots of the vellum, one croner (rear - lower) with a crease. In original wax dust wrapper with some chipping and shallow tears. Flexible blue leather covers with stamped double rule, garland stamped box with stamped facsimile signature of the author on the front. Gilded double rule on spine with gilded lettering and garland. One small pen-aize hold along front hinge, some scuffing at edges, else fine. Sewn-in blue cloth bookmark present and attached. Gilded top edge. Dedication to the King was ghost written by Samuel Johnson. Bound in calf with double rule gilded borders. Modern spine with title and author label and with gilded rules down the spine. Rubbing with slightly rounded corners and new endpapers. Complete with 3 plates, engravings, and tables within the text. Interior is toned, but otherwise clean and clear with minimal to no spotting.
