No date; circa 1935. A loverly early edition featuring seven charming monochromatic gravure plates and glassine page guards with captions. A lovely copy with toning to pages, bookshop stamp to front free endpaper, dust jacket with wear along edges, corners rubbed and with some pieces missing, shallow chip to lower end of spine, fore-edge with rubbing and wear. A very attractive copy.

A great vintage edition with foxing to pages, bookplate and inscription to verso of endpaper, wear to cloth at extremities, some light fading to cloth and with spine title gilt a bit dull, else a very attractive copy.

Together with his bookplate to front pastedown, and an article laid in by him (he later became a prominent associated press reporter). Book in excellent condition, dust jacket toned, with 1940s bookstore sticker on spine, a hint of spotting to front panel, minor soiling to rear panel, chipping to spine ends.

Quarto, original red pictorial cloth featuring Santa going down a chimney to front cover, 20 illustrations with 6 in full color and remaining ones two-toned. This copy with correct first issue points with section headings of “Book First”, “Book Second” and “Book Third”. Known for his Land of Oz, Baum in this story tells the life of Santa and just so happens Santa hails from the same enchanted Forest from which the Land of Oz obtained all its magic from! A very bright copy with just a hint of fading to spine cloth, corners and ends of spine lightly rubbed, white area to roof line illustration on cover with some very mild rubbing, else an excellent copy.

Various Places, Mainly New York, Costa Rica, and California, 1938 to 1956. A collection of 40 letters, together with several greeting cards, and many original mailing envelopes, all sent by Rene Belbenoit, French American author of the bestseller Dry Guillotine, a memoir of his experiences in the French penal colony of Devil’s Island, off the coast of French Guiana. Arrested in Paris after committing numerous thefts, Belbenoit was sentenced to 16 years in Devil’s Island. He escaped from the colony in 1935, and reached the United States in 1937. Belbenoit worked towards the abolition of the penal colony, which he sharply criticized in his novels, the publication of which led to a public outcry against the colony and its eventual closure.
