On 19 October 1800, Charles-Alexandre Lesueur set sail on a voyage of discovery to the Southern Lands led by Nicolas Baudin. He soon demonstrated his talents as a natural history artist. Driven by an insatiable curiosity, during a golden age for natural history and learned societies, he travelled constantly throughout his life. His sketchbooks and vellums provide a record of the animals, landscapes and indigenous people he encountered.

Bain & Burtt were Auckland shipping agents and merchants. The co-owner of the firm, James Burtt, was also American Vice-Consul in Auckland. Manuscript letter in ink on laid paper, one page quarto, with a conjugate leaf with address panel and red wax seal; dated at 'Newgate, 9th May 1787', signed 'Thos. Baker', and addressed to 'Right Honble. Lord Sydney, Secretary of State'; the letter is written in a fine hand, apparently by a scrivener on the prisoner's behalf (see below); old folds, conjugate leaf with small marginal loss where the seal was broken; a very well preserved document. A rare example of a First Fleet convict letter. At the Exeter Quarter Sessions on 10 January 1786, Thomas Baker - no occupation recorded - was found guilty of a felony and sentenced to transportation for seven years. He was initially held on the prison hulk Dunkirk at Plymouth, where a report from the superintendent described him as 'troublesome at times'. Programme for the 1923 Paris season of impresario Nikita Balieff's touring theatre revue La Chauve-Souris (The Bat). Founded in Moscow in 1907, and based in Paris from 1917, Balieff's troupe toured Europe, the United States and South Africa during the 1920s and early 1930s, achieving great popular and critical success. Its cabaret-style performances consisted of songs, dances, and sketches, most of which had been originally performed in Russia.

With a sweet gift inscription with arrow-pierced heart to endpaper. A fine edition of Balzac illustrated by Conder, known for his impressionist work created in Australian in the 1880s. Conder would go on to issue a series of lithographed inspired by Balzac in 1899. Leonard Smithers was a publisher and bookshop owner known for his links to the Decadent movement, in particular his association with Oscar Wilde. Recorded in three Australian libraries (National Library of Australia; State Library of Victoria; State Library of Queensland).

[Melbourne: the artist, 2009]. Artist’s book. Edition 2/3, signed, titled and dated 2009 in pencil. Handmade book with black cloth covered board ends measuring 230 x 185 mm. The work becomes a concertina-fold diorama consisting of a folded sheet of rag paper with six illustrated panels. Each of the panels features handcut linocuts in the shape of patterns and leaves collaged and hand-stitched onto the paper with coloured cotton. This intricate paper construction stretches to approximately 1450mm in its entirety. Elizabeth Banfield was born in the U.K. in 1963 and arrived in Australia in 1966. She received her Bachelor of Fine Art degree from the University of South Australia in 1984, majoring in printmaking. From a series of initial student exhibitions in Adelaide in the 1980s she went on to exhibit in national printmaking exhibitions in Melbourne, Adelaide, and New South Wales. Handmade red cloth-covered boards measuring 105 x 85 mm with concertinafold rag paper fastened to the boards, hand-stitched with linocut illustrations of leaves and overlaid with further linocut designs. When opened, the book can either be extended in linear fashion or folded back upon itself to produce a wheel or star. The artwork deliberately conceals decorative elements from instant view to reflect the themes of veiling and concealment and the pursuit of beauty.  This complex paper construction is meticulously executed by hand and housed in a folding card box with string ties.
