Description:
Second Edition (With Corrections). Small Octavo (17.5 x 10.5 cm), [xvi], 358, With one copper engraved folding map and two copper engraved plates on one leaf. Recent handsome period style brown gilt tooled half sheep with marbled boards and a red gilt title label. Some leaves with very mild browning, otherwise a very good copy. "Baegert, a German Jesuit missionary and resident of Baja California for eighteen years, wrote an interesting but by no means glowing account of the natives and of the country. He served at the mission of San Luis Gonzaga. The map is most helpful in giving the location of the many Jesuit missions in Lower California. It also shows the route along the west coast of Mexico followed by Baegert in going to California in 1751, and his route out in 1768, after the expulsion of the Jesuits. The two plates, which are not found with all… Read More

Fold marks, a small minor stain, but overall a very good letter written in a legible hand.Interesting letter by a pioneer jeweller of Eddyville (Iowa) and Chillicothe (Missouri), talking about his store in Eddyville, the construction of the railroad which had extended 20 miles away from Eddyville by that time (the line built by “Keokuk, Des Moines & Minnesota Railway Co.” will reach Eddyville in May 1861), and mentioning the unfolding Pike’s Peak Gold Rush in western Kansas and Nebraska. Written with spelling mistakes and addressed to Barker’s brother, who lived in the family town of Oriskany Falls (NY), the letter is an interesting example of pre-Civil War correspondence by an American Midwest… Read More

Oblong Octavo receipt (ca. 11 x 21cm). Early historically interesting billhead of California’s pioneer bookseller A. Roman & Co, returning an “imperfect” copy of one of the earliest Merriam-Webster dictionaries to publisher G & C Merriam (Merriam-Webster) in Springfield, Massachusetts. Dated 29 October 1867, the billhead charges $9.00 for “Websters Dictionary Imperfect Returned” and $2.00 for the “freight fuel” from San Francisco to Springfield. Importantly, the document also features Merriam’s later note about sending the damaged book to the company’s binder and the proprietor of Riverside Press, Henry Oscar Houghton (1823-1893), in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Houghton got signed by the G & C Merriam Co. in 1863, almost twenty years after the Merriams secured publishing and revision rights to Webster’s… Read More
