Description:
The History Press Ltd, 2012 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The dust jacket is a little faded. This history of game shoots in Ireland is more than a sporting catalogue or a monument to privilege; it is a vibrant record of the changing face of a country and a society. During the heyday of a landed gentry poised on the brink of social upheaval, organized shooting played a central role in the lives of both rich and poor across large swathes of the countryside. For some it was the theater in which alliances were forged, marriages made, and economic ties strengthened; for others it was a primary source of employment and a mainstay of everyday life. In addition, what can sometimes be missed in the debate on the place of such pursuits in a modern world is the central role that game shooting has played in conservationism and the protection of wildlife habitats. These arguments and more are explored in this book, set against the background of the richly colored world of the Ascendancy at play..

Description:
Gill & Macmillan, 2009 Book. New. Soft cover. Originally commissioned as a series of over two hundred short radio programmes, the texts have now been re-edited to provide a sweeping single narrative of Irish history from the end of the ice age to the peace settlement in Northern Ireland. Jonathan Bardon covers all the obvious things: the invasions, battles, development of towns and cities, the Reformation, the Georgian era, the Famine, rebellions and resistance, the difference of Ulster, partition, the twentieth century. What makes his book so valuable, however, are the quirky subjects he chooses to illustrate how history really works: the great winter freeze of 1740 and the famine that followed; crime and duelling; an emigrant voyage; evictions. These episodes get behind the historical headlines to give a glimpse of past realities that might otherwise be lost to view. The author has retained the original episodic structure of the radio programmes. The result is a marvellous mosaic of the… Read More

Description:
Gill Books, 2023 Book. New. Hardcover. Nation Is Born celebrates a formative period in the history of the Irish state: the fifteen years during which we emerged from the rubble of wars and violence and set up as a fledgling country while establishing a diplomatic presence on the world stage. The photos presented here have been painstakingly hand-colourised by photographer John O'Byrne, infusing energy into this often-overlooked time: the election of the country's first governments; the mammoth Shannon hydroelectric scheme; a stunning Eucharistic Congress; scenes of cottage industry and rural Irish life; and ending with the uncertain rumblings of war in Europe. With over 150 photographs gathered from archives around the country, accompanied by insightful and accessible commentary by historian Michael B. Barry, A Nation Is Born brings a fresh perspective on our history and our past to life in a compellingly real way..

Description:
Oxford University Press, 2023 Book. New. Hardcover. This book revisits the history of industry and industrial and economic policy in independent Ireland from the birth of the state to the eve of EEC accession. Though there were several manufacturing employers of significance, and smaller firms in operation in almost every major branch of industry, the Irish Free State was predominantly agricultural at its establishment in 1922. Industrial development was high on the nationalist agenda, as would be the case across the entire developing world in the later post-colonial era. Despite decades of protection, and a substantial increase in the size of the manufacturing sector, Ireland remained under-industrialised when it joined the European Economic Community in 1973. Over the previous decade and a half however the foundations of later convergence had been laid. Ireland was an early adopter of what would come to be known as dual-track reform. The policy of attracting outward-oriented foreign direct… Read More

Description:
Mercier Press, 2013 Book. New. Soft cover. First published in 1949, 'Guerilla Days in Ireland' is an extraordinary story of the Irish War of Independence and the fight between two unequal forces, which ended in the withdrawal of the British from twenty-six counties. Seven weeks before the Truce of July 1921, the British presence in County Cork consisted of a total of over 12,500 men. Against these British forces stood the Irish Republican Army whose flying columns never exceeded 310 riflemen in the whole of the county. These flying columns were small groups of dedicated Volunteers, severely commanded and disciplined. Constantly on the move, their paramount objective was merely to exist, to strike when conditions were favourable and to avoid disaster at all costs. In 'Guerilla Days in Ireland' Tom Barry describes the setting up of the West Cork flying column, its training and the plan of campaign, which he implemented. In particular he gives his account of the Kilmichael ambush, one of… Read More

Description:
Cambridge University Press, 2011 Book. New. Soft cover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Ireland has rarely been out of the news during the past thirty years. Whether as a war-zone in which Catholic nationalists and Protestant Unionists struggled for supremacy, a case study in conflict resolution or an economy that for a time promised to make the Irish among the wealthiest people on the planet, the two Irelands have truly captured the world's imagination. Yet single-volume histories of Ireland are rare. Here, Thomas Bartlett, one of the country's leading historians, sets out a fascinating new history. Integrating politics, society and culture, he offers an authoritative historical road map that shows exactly how - and why - Ireland, north and south, arrived at where it is today. This is an indispensable guide to both the legacies of the past for Ireland's present and to the problems confronting north and south in the contemporary world. .

Description:
The Oakwood Press, 2021 Book. New. Soft cover. The book begins with an account of Connemara, in the west of Ireland, and the various schemes put forward to link its two main settlements, Galway and Clifden. The first of these was proposed in 1860, but it was over 30 years before the line was built by the Midland Great Western Railway who operated it until 1925 when the government shied away from Nationalisation but merged all railways operating only in Irish Free State into Great Southern Railways. The line closed in 1935. Given the full Oakwood treatment there are eleven chapters including Train Services, Locomotives and Rolling Stock and Road Services . Appendices include the Shantalla Siding, Tourism and the Recess Hotel, The Ulster & Connaught Light Railway and The Marconi Railway, Clifden . The illustrations comprise photographs of stations, signals, and tickets as well as maps, charts, diagrams and advertisements..

Description:
Clachan Publishing, 2014 Book. New. Soft cover. In this invaluable resource for both local and family historians, Becker, a renown nineteenth century journalist, journeys through Mayo, Galway, Clare, Limerick, Cork, and Kerry, during 1880, reporting the Land War. We hear of the places he visited and the people he met, including Captain Boycott. Members of the landed gentry and military are depicted as struggling to cope with the ostracism of the local populations of Westport, Castlebar, Ballinrobe, Connemara, Ennis, and Gortatlee, Tralee, Killarney and Valencia. The locals are depicted as lively, courteous and impenetrable as they close ranks against a system, which is driving them from the land. His analysis is often sympathetic to the hungry, unkempt native Irish, but ultimately he retires within the boycotted boundaries of the country houses of the besieged Irish gentry. Clachan editors have edited it carefully, updating certain disused symbols, spelling and punctuation. We have also provided an… Read More
